    Tape Backup

The most economical way to store cold data

While cloud storage and SAN snapshots have their advantages in random and partial restores, tape data protection is faster, more efficient, and far more affordable. We at YKP Systems believe that data protection shouldn’t have a size limitation. That the cost per gigabyte should be low. That data should be stored in the most indestructible manner possible. This is why we maintain support for tape backup.

Yes, with YKP Systems DataCenter you can replicate data to an alternate location. A function of our backup retention is to use an alternate target for cloning (replicating) already backed up data to different media. This can be another disk, NAS, tape device or a cloud provider such as Amazon S3.

Yes, all YKP Systems products support LTO8 single tape drives.

Yes, YKP Systems DataCenter supports Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL). This includes Amazon’s AWS Storage Gateway: Virtual tape backup to the cloud.

Yes, YKP Systems DataCenter can utilize a tape drive device or tape library device that is located on your LAN as a target destination storage device. However, to support this it does require the computer where the tape device is located to have a small agent software component installed on it, which installs as a Windows service. The agent component can be pushed remotely to that Windows Server that has the tape device installed on it, for that tape device to be utilized as a destination storage device for backups. Any computer in your environment which has the DataCenter client software installed on it can then target that tape drive device as a destination storage location for backups.

USB, NAS, or Tape for Offsite Backup?

While there are pros and cons for all three, the immediate follow-up concern is offsite backup and what I would use. While both USB and NAS backup solutions can be used effectively to handle internal backups, offsite backups can become a hassle (or even a danger). Tape however is often a much more manual process than the USB or NAS configurations.

Virtual Tape Library Support

Virtual Tape Library Support (VTL) with Amazon AWS Storage Gateway

Amazon’s Tape Gateway helps organizations make a smooth transition from tape to cloud backup, using YKP Systems DataCenter backup software. Organizations can now eliminate the operational burden of provisioning, scaling, and maintaining a physical tape infrastructure.
